She’s Gotta Have It, but Can She Have It All?

So by now (hopefully), you’ve all binge watched this incredible Netflix series. Spike Lee doesn’t disappoint, at least not with this updated version of the original 1986 film She’s Gotta Have It. Did you know that was his first feature length film? He also starred as Mars, my favorite character in the Netflix series. Let me first say, he grew on me because during the first episode I couldn’t stand him.

I have conversations with my friends (and random people) all the time about likes, dislikes, what they really want in a partner. We’ve all heard of the 80/20 rule where they say you get 80% of what you want and 20% of what you really don’t want (or would prefer to live without). Nola isn’t taking that. She’s dating 3 guys (and a GROWN woman) at one time and is unapologetic about it.

So, it’s pretty simple why I love Mars. I’ve always fallen for a guy that can make me laugh. I’m a self-proclaimed sarcasm queen so you have to have a sense of humor to fall in line. One thing about Mars too is that he really showed that he cared about Nola each time she had an issue that he was aware of, even bringing in his sister to help him out. He wasn’t really stable, but he had great qualities.

The other two? *sigh* I don’t think I have enough energy to go in depth. Jamie – married. Greer is so into himself, every time he showed up on the screen I rolled my eyes. 😂

Let’s not forget about Opal – that’s a GROWN woman. She has no time for Nola’s games, and can we blame her? I know we haven’t seen the last of Opal yet, especially with how the first season ended.

I love the series because it is absolutely how people live in Brooklyn. There’s someone similar to Papo in my neighborhood (minus the artist part). Everyone on the block knows him, sometimes I’ll see cops coming out with coffee or food for him from the local bodega. This is Brooklyn. The cat calling episode, man. You haven’t seen real cat calling until you’ve walked the NY streets, especially in Brooklyn. Well, that’s just my opinion. Dating is the same too. You literally date for fun (and more than one person at a time because you’re still single), or until you and the other person like each other so much to make it official.

Also, I feel like I have to say this. Dating = Going on dates. That’s it.

What’s the one thing you have to have in a partner or it’s a no go? For me, I always say consistency. Who’s your favorite guy (or is Opal your fave) on “She’s Gotta Have It” and why?

P.S. – Can we really have it all?

Him: It’s the 80/20 rule, you can’t get everything you want.

Me: Yeah, true. There’s no way I’m compromising on the basics, though.
